Save the date — Tuesday, Aug. 1. It’s National Night Out.

The goal of National Night Out is to strengthen neighborhood bonds by bringing neighbors together to watch their neighborhoods and prevent crime. It is a great time to have a neighborhood barbecue, potluck or ice cream social. Last year there were more than 25 neighborhood gatherings in Hutchinson.

Shelters in the city parks can be reserved through Hutchinson Parks and Recreation by calling 320-587-2975. If tables and chairs are needed, they are available through the McLeod County Fairgrounds at 320-587-2499. The rental fee is $5 for one table and eight chairs. Tables and chairs are also available, without cost, through Parks and Recreation by calling 320-587-2975. If delivery is requested, there is a $10 charge. To designate a no-traffic area for a gathering, traffic barriers can be obtained through the Hutchinson Police Department by calling 320-587-2242.

In the past, members of the police department, fire department and ambulance crews have stopped by many of the neighborhood gatherings.

Whatever you and your neighbors decide to do, make Tuesday, Aug. 1 an evening to remember.
